FAQ

Q: How many bracelets will Press Uncuffed make? How long will you sell bracelets?

A: Our initial goal is to make a minimum of 10,000 bracelets. We’ll continue to make them as long as there is sustainable demand.

Q: How long will it take for my bracelet to arrive?

A: It depends on when you place your order. Our production partners in Memphis are working as fast as they can to build inventory and fulfill orders. It may take up to four weeks, but we’re trying to get them to you faster.

Q: Are the bracelets available for sale beyond the United States?

A: Yes. International shipping rates apply.

Q: How did you select the nine journalists? Will you honor others? Can I choose which journalist is on my bracelet?

A: We started with some of the journalists the University of Maryland students studied and added others with consultation from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) to ensure a diverse geographic representation. We will add other names as demand for the bracelets allows.

Q: Can I choose which journalist is on my bracelet?

A: You can choose your size, but in order to keep the price down and optimize our donation to the CPJ, we are asking supporters to learn about and honor the journalist whose name appears on the bracelet they receive.

Q: Do you offer wholesale pricing for someone who wants to resell the bracelets?

A: We are happy to sell the bracelets in larger quantities to those who are interested (email us at pressuncuffed@gmail.com). We ask that they be never resold for a price higher than $10, as we believe Press Uncuffed should not be viewed as a profit opportunity.

Q: Where are they being made?

A: The bracelets are made in Memphis, TN of LuciteLux® acrylic. The printing is done by TechPlus Inc. and the actual manufacture is being done by Advanced Material Systems.

Q: How do I know which size is the best fit for me?

A: The small is 7” including a .5” opening; the medium is 7.75” with a .75" opening; the large is 8.25” with a .75" opening; and the extra large is 8.75” with a .75".

We recommend taking a measuring tape (or a piece of string you pre-measure) and wrapping it around your wrist to see what feels best for you. The small tends to fit most women. The medium is a popular size for men. Please know that the bracelets are not form fitting; the material cannot be bent to fit tighter.

We recommend you use a tape measure to select the size that will fit you best.

Q: How do I take care of it?

A: LuciteLux® is a very strong acrylic material – it was originally used for WWII fighter planes as windshields, periscopes and gunner turrets! That said, it could scratch, crack or break if you bang it on a hard surface or bend or twist it. Use a mild detergent and warm water to clean your bracelet. Never use a harsh ammonia, acetone or alcohol-based product, such as window cleaner or nail polish remover. Finally, use a soft sponge or cloth – never an abrasive material – to clean it.

Q: What happens if one of the journalists is freed during your campaign?

A: Nothing would make us happier. We believe that any journalist who spends time in prison deserves to be honored, even after their release.

Q: How much does it cost to make the bracelets? Is my donation tax deductible?

A: It costs approximately $3.00 per bracelet for us to print, manufacture, package and ship a bracelet (not including the actual shipping costs). The proceeds benefit CPJ’s Emergency Assistance Fund. CPJ is a 501(c)(3) under federal tax guidelines. Donations made are tax deductible, however the amount paid for merchandise is generally not. Consult your tax advisor for more information.

Q: Can I return my bracelet if I’m not satisfied or it doesn’t fit?

A: In order to keep the price down and optimize our donation to the CPJ, we cannot accept returns. We hope you will share your concern about this cause by passing the bracelet along to someone who can wear it.
